Alligator Extends Boundary Once Again
By GEORGE WILLIAMS
MIAMI–Officer Riker T. Olana with the Metropolitan-Dade Department of Animal Control responded to a call at approximately 5 Tuesday morning. The Miami Police department received a call reporting an alligator attack west of the city. When he arrived at the scene, Officer Olana explained that he’d found an elderly woman very upset while clutching a tattered dog leash. Closer investigation by the officer narrowed the alligator’s location to some underbrush a few hundred feet away as it quietly consumed the last bit remaining of the woman’s pet dog. Various attempts to draw the gator out of its hideout were fruitless. Another officer, at the orders of Officer Riker, fired warning shots which did send the ominous animal scuttling back towards the swamp. Officer Riker did succeed in hitting the animal with a tranquilizer dart in the tail as he aimed a shot in the dark toward the sounds emanating from the animal’s retreat. The animal managed to escape despite the officer’s attempt to drive in the underbrush and get to him before it crawled away. Officer Riker did recover the dog’s collar and promptly turned it over to police officers.<A photo of Riker handing the collar over is inserted here.>
Officials are warning residents of the area to be on the look out for the estimated 8 foot, 210 pound alligator noting that he is dangerous and obviously unafraid.
{Riker’s description: Male, 6’2″, late twenties, weighing approximately 170 pounds, military styled crew-cut black hair, blue eyes, unshaven stubble with a mustache, wearing official uniform of the Department of Animal Control.}
