Finding NPCs

NPCs, acquired through whatever means, that are posted, assigned, or bound to a specific location can act in concert and do not fall under the 1 NPC per PC rule. The following restrictions apply:

  1. These NPCs will be run by Staff.
  2. The actions of the NPCs must be thoroughly judgenoted on the room in which they’re bound/assigned.
  3. These NPCs will not follow a PC around on the grid without a judge present, and will only be out on the grid /with/ a staffer present under special circumstances. (i.e.; You’re taking your gang to another gang HQ to fight their NPCs.)
  4. These NPCs will not be ‘sent out after’ another PC.

For the purpose of this ruling, NPCs are defined as: Beings (human or non-human) that are not player characters, whose stats are taken from templates in the books. (i.e.; gang members, police officers, bound spirits, chantry/construct guardians, caern guardians, etc.)

Ways to Find NPCS:

  1. Through a background such as Kinfolk, Status, Rank, etc. that allow you to roll to acquire NPCs from your organization, tradition, etc.
  2. By rolling to find an individual NPC for an individual task.

There are merits which may allow you to locate NPCs such as mercenaries, and players attempting to use merits instead of the above backgrounds must go to their sphere wiz. These will be handled on a case by case basis.

Rolling using backgrounds:

Charisma or Manipulation + the appropriate background is rolled at a difficulty determined by the judge. The level of your background determines the maximum number of NPCs you can have.

Level of StatMax # of NPCs
12
25
310
420
550

If rolling Kinfolk, Rank, or Status, the NPCs you get will be basic template NPCs out of books such as V:PG, Destiny’s Price (for Criminal/Street NPCs), etc.

Rolling for specific NPCs:

SuccesesEffect
BOTCH Detection of some type (will be unknown to character)
0Can not locate appropriate type. May wait 1 IC day and try again at diff +1.
1NPC with a 4-Dice pool
2NPC with a 5-Dice pool
3NPC with a 6-Dice pool
4NPC with a 7-Dice pool
5+NPC with a 8-Dice pool

The stat you roll to find the NPC must have something to do with the purpose of the NPC. For example, if you are rolling to find a forger or drug dealer, it would be Wits+Streetwise. Investigation or research may always be used, at a +1 difficulty (unless Investigation or Research directly relate to the purpose of the NPC).

Supplemental rolls are allowed, at the judge’s discretion.

NPCs have the following limitations:

  • No extended rolling.
  • No supporting rolls.

If you use the same NPC over and over, you may be required to buy it as a retainer.
